Social Lab – new!

BUILT

Brasília-DF, 2019

The Social Lab bar is located in an Asa Sul commercial center in Brasilia, characterized by twinned units. The largest façade faces the covered gallery between the blocks, a passage space for those who live in the residential blocks. In some similar blocks, these passages convey the feeling of insecurity as they are flanked by blind side facades. Thus, the design of the bar started from two main premises: to qualify the space of the public gallery and take advantage of its nighttime operation, exploring the idea of “transformation” of the space at night.

We defined the main access facing the public gallery and the access through the residential block. During the night, therefore, commerce gains an “active corner” exactly at the crossing point that normally has problems with qualification, lighting and maintenance in similar commercial blocks. The possibilities of using this space are expanded by the collective “mesão” with ten meters in length positioned along the main facade.

The project uses the structure of a pre-existing restaurant: we reuse most of the kitchen and part of the bar structure that protrudes out of the store area, in addition to the stairs and bathrooms on the 1st floor. We “envelop” the whole set with translucent plastic tile, the same one that was cut into small strips to be used as a light diffuser on the ground floor. We use a new granite floor with black mass and white marble scraps in all internal environments, the same type of material that was used in several pillars of neighboring residential buildings.
