INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP LABORATORIO CIUDAD DE QUITO

PROJECT WORKSHOP

Time Length: 4 days
Place: Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, PUCE, Quito, Ecuador 2014

Mercado Mayorista – 50 years ahead

This workshop has analysed the present state of occupation of the área of Quito´s Central Market (Mercado Mayorista) and its limits within the city´s territory. Located in Quito´s Southern zone, the market has started an incipient initiative of fertilizer production within its premises, using the huge amount of the daily leftovers. The partially unorganized growth of the formal and informal structures inside the Market and the constant flux of people and vehicles aggravate daily problems and risks the sustainable growth of its physical structure. The project proposes a hypothetical future for the Mercado Mayorista 50 years from now, defining strategies and directives for a potencial vertical growth using megastructures with elevated walkways that can shelter different activities and organize the growth of formal and informal services that already coexist. The idea is to potentalize the existing sinergy between diferente activities and to eventually aggregate aditional functions such as housing or schools without interfering in its present perimeter of occupation.

Tutoring Architect:  Matheus Seco (BLOCO)
Students: Esteban Albán, Karen Aguilar, Pablo Arias, Juan Encalada, Eduardo García, Carla Godoy, Matías Henrández, María Paz Jara, Pablo Jaramillo, Doménica Manciati, Isaac Mera, Lorena Ochoa, Diana Peñaloza, Martín Real, Cristina Román, Andrea Rubio, Diego Salgado, Elisa Vintimilla
