Honorable Mention at the 55th IAB-RJ (Brazilian Institute of Architects, Rio de Janeiro) Awards, category “Interior Design”

The typology of local commerce between the superblocks of the Asa Sul is defined by twinned units with covered galleries facing the street on one side and the residential superblock on the other. The original idea of Lucio Costa´s project was to have the main facade facing the residential area, however the reality was configured opposite to this. We proposed to recover the possible connection between commercial street and residential superquadra through the interior of the restaurant.

We used materials normally found on the sidewalks and walls of the closest stores such as grilles, apparent bricks and cement floors. We invited three artists with works scattered around the area to intervene on the inner walls. We wanted to reinforce the idea that the space of the restaurant is the continuity of the urban space. We maximized visual contact with the outside in the tables’ halls while the services and the kitchen were distributed underground and inside enclosed cores inside the restaurant. We expanded the visual connection with the outer space by creating retractable skylights on the first floor. This allows the tables’ hall turn into an open terrace at night during the city’s long dry spell.
